Lucignano is a small medieval village overlooking the Valdichiana, halfway between Siena and Arezzo. We can certainly call it one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and owes his fortune to the geographical location, between Arezzo, Siena and Perugia. During the Middle Ages wars, controlling Lucignano meant controlling the transit routes to these cities.
Lucignano is also known for the Tree of Love, also called Tree of Life or Golden Tree.
A true masterpiece of Gothic art of gold, a tree decorated with coral, enamel and crystals. A work that seals the promises of love for good fortune and eternal happiness. Many couples choose actually to celebrate such a romantic ceremony just in front of the “Tree of Love”.
The Tree of Love is in the Municipal Museum in a large glass case in the center of a beautiful hall. Ugolino da Vieri and Gabriel D'Antonio are the authors of this admirable work of Siena-Arezzo goldsmiths. Its realization lasted more than a century, from 1350 to 1471. The frame is placed on a gilded silver casket in Gothic temple with three floors, in turn supported by a large golden base. Twelve branches grow from the trunk, six on the right six on the left, covered with vine groves leaves glazed and ending with small shrines for relics, medallions that originally contained miniatures and rock crystals surrounded by coral branches to symbolize the blood of Jesus. The whole work culminates with a crucifix over it and a pelican that gets the breast, to feed the young with her own blood, a sacrifice that emulates the act of love accomplished by Christ towards men.
The Golden Tree is the only example in the world of reliquary in the shape of a tree. It suffered many bed events it was stolen and they found it back buried underground. A careful restoration made him to get back to its ancient splendor and limited the damages.
It has not been yet officially confirmed by the administration, but there are good chances that the Golden Tree will be one of the art works present in the Italian Pavilion of Expo Milano 2015.
